Privacy Policy

Last updated: 27 April 2026

The National Film and Sci-Fi Museum website (nationalfilmandscifimuseum.com) is owned and operated by Showmasters Events Ltd. This policy explains what personal data we collect about you, why we collect it, what we do with it, and the rights you have over your data under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

If anything here is unclear, please contact us at [email protected].

1. Who we are (the Data Controller)

The data controller responsible for your personal data is:

Showmasters Events Ltd, trading as the National Film and Sci-Fi Museum
34 Secklow Gate W, Milton Keynes, MK9 3AT
Company registered in England and Wales, number 04562209
Email: [email protected]

2. What we collect and why

We collect two kinds of information:

Information you give us voluntarily — when you sign up to our newsletter, register for forums, complete a survey, enter a poll, contact us, or share a page with a friend.

Information collected automatically — anonymised analytics about how visitors use the site (pages viewed, browser type, referring source, search terms used on site). This is aggregated and is not used to identify individuals.

The specific services that involve personal data are set out below.

2.1 Email newsletters

If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address (and any other details you choose to provide). We use this only to send you the newsletter. Every email contains an unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time.

Lawful basis: Consent (Article 6(1)(a) UK GDPR).

2.2 Forums and message boards

If we offer forums or message boards, you must register with a username, password, and email address to post. Anything you post publicly is visible to other users — please don’t share personal information you wouldn’t want public.

Lawful basis: Consent / Performance of a contract.

2.3 “Email this to a friend”

If we offer a feature to share content by email, we use the email addresses you provide solely to send that one message. We do not store either address afterwards or use them for any other purpose.

Lawful basis: Legitimate interest (one-off transactional message you initiated).

2.4 Polls and surveys

Responses are aggregated and anonymous. We may use a cookie to prevent duplicate voting; that cookie is not linked to your identity. Where we share survey results with sponsors or partners, we share aggregated data only — never anything that identifies you personally.

Lawful basis: Consent.

2.5 Website analytics

We track overall traffic patterns (page views, browser type, referring source) to understand which content works and to improve the site. We do not track individual users’ reading habits.

Lawful basis: Legitimate interest, subject to your cookie preferences (see Section 5).

3. Children

This website is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under the age of 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided personal data without verifiable parental consent, we will delete it promptly. Parents who believe their child has submitted personal data to us should contact [email protected].

4. How long we keep your data

We keep your data only as long as needed for the purpose it was collected:

  • Newsletter subscribers — until you unsubscribe.
  • Forum accounts — until you ask us to delete the account, or until extended inactivity (we may delete accounts inactive for more than 3 years).
  • “Email a friend” addresses — not retained after the message is sent.
  • Analytics data — aggregated and retained for up to 26 months.

5. Cookies

A cookie is a small text file stored in your browser. Cookies cannot read data from your hard drive or read cookies set by other sites.

We use cookies for:

  • Strictly necessary cookies — required for the site to function (e.g. session, login state). These don’t need consent.
  • Analytics cookies — to understand traffic patterns. We only set these with your consent via our cookie banner.
  • Functional cookies — for things like remembering you’ve voted in a poll.

You can refuse or delete cookies at any time via your browser settings. The site will still work without analytics or functional cookies, but some interactive features (forums, polls, surveys) require cookies to be enabled.

6. How we use your information

We use the data you provide to:

  • Deliver newsletters you’ve subscribed to.
  • Operate forums, polls, surveys, and other interactive features.
  • Improve the website based on aggregated usage patterns.
  • Produce aggregated reports on audience demographics for sponsors and partners. These reports never identify individual users.

We will never share newsletter mailing lists with third parties, including advertisers, sponsors, or partners.

7. Sharing your data

We do not sell your personal data. We share it only in these limited circumstances:

  • Service providers acting on our behalf (e.g. email delivery, website hosting, analytics). These providers process data under contract and only on our instructions.
  • Aggregated, non-identifying reports for sponsors and partners.
  • Legal obligations — where required to comply with law, valid legal process, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.

8. International transfers

Some of our service providers may be located outside the UK. Where this is the case, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place — typically the UK International Data Transfer Agreement, the EU Standard Contractual Clauses with the UK Addendum, or a country covered by UK adequacy regulations.

9. Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to:

  • Access — get a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Rectification — have inaccurate data corrected.
  • Erasure — ask us to delete your data (“right to be forgotten”).
  • Restriction — ask us to limit how we use your data.
  • Portability — receive your data in a portable format.
  • Object — object to processing based on legitimate interest, including direct marketing.
  • Withdraw consent — at any time, where consent is the lawful basis.

To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected]. We will respond within one month.

If you’re not happy with how we’ve handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or by calling 0303 123 1113. We’d appreciate the chance to address your concerns first, but you can complain to the ICO at any time.

10. Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit (HTTPS), firewall protection, and access controls. Only authorised personnel can access personal data. We review our security and privacy practices regularly.

No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your data.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of the page will reflect the most recent change. Material changes will be highlighted on the website.

12. Your consent

By using this website, you consent to the collection and use of your information as described in this policy.
